So engrossed in work was I yesterday that I completely missed the big news of the day – the verdict against Musharraf and his sentencing.
Can’t approve of the death sentence, of course, but this is basically the least likely one to be carried out, ever.
But otherwise it is to be celebrated. There must be consequences, at least on paper, for a coup, for abrogating the constitution (twice!), and for his leadership which caused thousands to disappear and many more to die. The death of a Baluch sardar in a cave was a moment when it seemed to turn – I was in the province’s smaller cities some months later and the anger was palpable. He was well known to my grandfather, who had his own part to play in that particular saga, so it seemed particularly shocking at the time. Though my grandfather was not surprised.
Nothing will happen to Musharraf, but unless the court walks it back, it is to be celebrated nonetheless.
